About this deal

Midnight Mass' is one of those books that should come with multiple trigger warnings for torture, gang rape, sexual slavery, the murder of children, desecration, executed bodies hung from telegraph poles, and cannibalism. Second, we’re not in the subscriptions business. Vox is here to help everyone understand the complex issues shaping the world — not just the people who can afford to pay for a subscription. We believe that’s an important part of building a more equal society. And we can’t do that if we have a paywall.

In Splendoribus Sanctorum is used for the Communion chant during traditional Catholic midnight mass.

What happened to Erin and Mildred Gunning's blood?

I know it sounds like a very bad and probably socially unacceptable joke, but this was my first thought when I started reading this book by F. Paul Wilson. But it actually does this very dark and serious vampire apocalypse fiction a disservice.

The prolific creators went on to serve up the second installment of The Haunting anthology and Midnight Mass was announced as their next project. In July, 2019, Deadline reported that it would be a seven-episode series and, after that ending, it seems pretty definitive it was only intended as a miniseries. A wild-cat infestation is flourishing on the island, rumored to have been caused by people bringing pets from the mainland. The kitties' diet has been slightly unconventional. Up until the '20s, residents used to bury their deceased family members in their yards. During a particularly major storm, the Uppards area of the island would overflow and corpses would wash up on the beach... and the cats would feed. Somewhat helpfully, this infestation is handled in the days following the Angel's secret arrival. The Mist has been brought to life onscreen twice, as a critically acclaimed 2007 movie and a less-liked 2017 miniseries remake. The gruesome story sees a group of small-town locals trapped in a supermarket after a storm sees the titular weather phenomenon descends on their town and brings with it inter-dimensional monsters. However, one of the locals is as much a threat to the heroes as the monsters, as a local busybody, Ms. Carmody, appoints herself the moral arbiter of the community and decides one of the group must be sacrificed to appease God. A transparently hypocritical Christian, Carmody’s character is echoed in the cruel but religiously devout Bev Keane of Midnight Mass.I read to the end of the book because the plot had its hooks in me and I wanted to see how things would work out. With the benefit of hindsight, the knowledge wasn't worth the trauma - which means my experience pretty much mirrors that of the 'good guys' in the story. She theorizes that their blood -- and likely the once wheelchair-bound Leeza's -- contains "something that repairs damaged cells, is violently photosensitive and causes an insane anemia. A desperate hunger for iron. Iron in blood." As the ratio of this infection in the blood increases, the physical alterations become more pronounced. Why does Erin lose her baby? Those conversations were so inseparable in my head, that this show was always where they were just kind of dumped,” he said. “It’s where they lived as a record of my perspective of sobriety through various points of my life — in the full grips of it, in the denial of it, and in the acceptance of it.”

Admitting he had a problem with alcohol gave him the clarity needed to make this version of Midnight Mass, he said: “It’s a very different show with three years of sobriety behind me than it would have been before that. I feel like it would have been an incomplete conversation.” The typical Flanagan fare wraps poignant stories of family, community, and unremitting optimism around horror-filled centers. This combo has made him a perfect collaborator with Netflix, the home of most of Flanagan’s recent work. In all of the films and series he’s written for the network so far, Flanagan has created tales whose horror plots draw broad audiences and whose rosy themes appeal directly to middle America. Flanagan’s Netflix partnership has also given him an enormous audience; The Haunting of Hill House, arguably his most successful project, was one of the most-binged series of 2018. A ton. Flanagan fans know that a prop novel titled Midnight Mass has been peppered throughout the director's other works, from 2016's Hush to 2017's Gerald's Game. The two main characters are a disgraced priest who was falsely accused of child molestation just before the end times, a nun who secretly loved him and his best friend a rabbi. Add in the priest's militant vegan feminist niece and it sounds like you have a set up for a joke. No punch line here, just fantastic and interesting characters. Wilson develops them well, and tests their various faiths as the world ends around them. Flanagan wrote the screenplay for the 2019 Stephen King movie “Doctor Sleep,” which is appropriate, since this seven-episode project feels like a King miniseries, for good and ill. Good, because the scary buildup draws the audience in, and bad, because the finish is – as is frequently true of King-derived works – a significant letdown. (For his part, the prolific author has already tweeted favorably about the show.)One of my first conversations with Mike was, ‘I’m playing a priest in this genre. I just want to make sure you don’t want me to be skewed, or sinister, or scary, or anything like that,'” Linklater said. “The guy is trying to do the right thing all the way through it, as far as his understanding of what the right thing is.” People aren't even safe from their own kind. Human 'cowboys' enlisted by the vampires herd other humans in return for the promise of the bite of eternal life - someday. Seriously, bad characterization and plot development here. The dialogue was embarrassing to read. The vampires have to explain in terrible, cheesy, monologues how truly evil they really are (!). The main character seems like a hopeless self-insertion. He is the manliest man who ever was, and has no flaws. The other characters have to keep repeating how great and admirable he is, because otherwise the reader wouldn't get it.
