Any book that sets out the whole of a famous General’s career will be massive and, probably, a very dull read and a book that tries to dissect the fine detail of what “Leadership” is and how a number of famous officers “led” would only appeal to the specialist reader so Al Murry does not try to do either of these things.

I came away buzzing and reassured that we still have in this century a wide ranging community fascinated not just by famous authors (I’ve rarely seen so many concentrated in one place) but by challenging ideas and questions. A routine on people using their phones too much is weak; much better is his idea for cheating speed cameras. Command highlights the performance and careers of some of the leading protagonists who commanded armies, as well as the lesser-known officers who led divisions, regiments and even battalions for the British, Commonwealth and United States of American armies. He will highlight the performance and careers of some of the leading protagonists of the Second World War, as well as lesser-known officers who led divisions, regiments and even battalions for the British, Commonwealth and United States armies during the Second World War. Because each chapter dealt with a different personality type, at a different period of time, in a different army and at a different stage in their careers the book was very wide ranging and had a very broad appeal. There seems to be a general consensus that Slim was one of the best - if not THE best - British officer of WW2. Now Al Murray has produced a book – Command: How The Allies Learned To Win the Second World War – in which he looks at the progress of the war through case studies of the men who, one way and another, made a difference to it. This led to the Sky One sitcom Time Gentlemen Please and the chat show Al Murray's Happy Hour for ITV. My bookshelves were groaning with WW2 books, Hitler's baleful eyes staring out at me from covers and spines for any new visitor (or passing burglar) to wonder if I might be a fan or at least mildly obsessed. Not wishing to steal Al Murray's thunder, I haven't read it yet, but Mark Urban's "Generals" is a very good read on a very similar theme. These last two show command as it means to the soldier going forward, with their officer beside them. He has earned numerous awards and accolades, such as the British Comedy Award for his ITV1 series Al Murray's Happy Hour, the Perrier Award and two Olivier Award nominations.

Through them, he tells how the allies rebounded from early defeats at Dunkirk and Pearl Harbour to victories at El Alamein and the D-Day invasion. From breakfast, alongside some of the attendees, who were talking books with each other a mile a minute, to the public event at The Sheldonian where everyone was lively and engaged – I felt I had arrived in a kind of literary heaven.Command sees Murray analysing key military leaders of the Second World War, including some of the lesser-known officers. Included are the ‘odd’ senior officers like Brigadier Wingate of Chindit fame and Percy Hobart of ‘Hobart’s Funnies’ fame, but who also raised the three most successful British armoured divisions in WW2.
