About this deal

The Girl on the Train has been compared frequently to Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, as both novels employ unreliable narrators and deal with suburban life. [1] Paula Hawkins has waved these comparisons off, however, saying in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter: "Amy Dunne is a psychopath, an incredibly controlling and manipulative, smart, cunning woman. [Rachel is] just a mess who can't do anything right." [19] Translations [ edit ] a b Maslin, Janet (4 January 2015). "Another Girl Gone in a Tale of Betrayal – 'The Girl on the Train' by Paula Hawkins". The New York Times . Retrieved 1 July 2016. Beautiful Writing – Debut author Paula Saunders truly has a way with words. Her phrasing often came across as lyrical even in the midst of a gritty story; plus, her use of similes was textbook perfect. I was so excited to see that this one was coming out this month and while I tried to keep my calendar open for all the Christmas books this month, I made an exception for this one and added it to my December calendar because I simply love her books!

stars: Set in 1960’s South Dakota, “The Distance Home” is a meditative novel about a dysfunctional marriage and the affects of that marriage on the children. The story is told in three parts; the first part opens with the end of the story: two sisters dealing with the death of their mother. Their father and brother had already passed and it is just the two girls. Each handled the death differently. McNary, Dave (6 December 2015). "Universal Boards Emily Blunt's 'Girl on the Train' ". Variety . Retrieved 23 December 2015.As the bustle of the winter holidays in the Little Shop of Found Things gives way to spring, Xanthe is left to reflect on the strange events of the past year. While she's tried to keep her time-traveling talents a secret from those close to her, she is forced to take responsibility for having inadvertently transported the dangerous Benedict Fairfax to her own time. Xanthe comes to see that she must use her skills as a Spinner if she and Flora are ever to be safe, and turns to the Spinners book for help. Paula Spencer gives some sort of resolution to this, fifteen years on, Paula is almost 50 and is more or less off the drink. Unlike it's predecessor, where the prime focus was Paula and the emotional and physical trauma she's dealing with due to her abusive marriage, this book focused more on Paula's kids and how her alcoholism and terrifying marriage to Charlo really messed them up or at least that's what I think the main focus is. At 30 she left her husband. Her letters from Paris were full of requests for money: 200 marks to pay her rent, 60 francs for models’ fees. Her studio was infested with fleas, there was a heatwave, but she kept working: 80 pictures in 1906. As Rodin told her: “ La travaille, c’est mon bonheur.” Kroll, Justin (24 March 2014). This was fantastic! I tend to enjoy time travel stories so I was drawn to this series from the start. Once I started reading the series, it became evident that this was something really special. I was really looking forward to this installment and it delivered on every level. I found this book to be a wonderful escape and really enjoyed going along with Xanthe during this adventure. Ballet in South Dakota – I don’t want to offend anyone from South Dakota, but ballet just isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when I think of a small town in The Mount Rushmore State. Yet, ballet played a huge role in The Distance Home. Leon, René’s older brother, was the first to start in ballet in the hunt to find a place for him to succeed. And, succeed he did. He was soon joined by René, later by younger sister, Jayne and finally even their mother, Eve. Ballet became a huge part of their lives, very nearly taking over. It was an escape that offered freedom and a sense of normalcy sadly missing from their lives. But, for Leon especially, it came with very high costs. René watched Leon’s demise as her own status rose. This is a masterful story of perseverance in the wake of being traumatised by abuse, loss and grief, and the giving up of old ways to begin a new life. I wondered what would become of Paula Spencer at the end of The Woman Who....". It intrigued me for many years, and so why I didn't read this book earlier is a bit of a surprise to myself. The book follows a family of five, from marriage to death, and how parenting affects the people that children and parents alike become. Eve and Al have three children (Leon, Rene and Jayne) and their two eldest children start dancing from an early age. Whilst Al adores Rene for her talent, he is cold and distant towards his son, never properly connecting with him. Eve makes up for this by favouring Leon and neglecting Rene. These complex family dynamics, and the effect which this has on the two children, is explored intricately and sensitively.

The novel follows their abusive childhoods through René's narrative. Occasionally inserted in the story is information from future discussions shared between Leon and Rene as adults. They provide a glimpse into the fallout from their childhood and the destruction that resulted. Families are complicated organisms and Saunders clearly captures this in The Distance Home. It has been said that the novel draws on Saunders's own family history, which makes perfect sense because the turmoil, emotions, and the prevailing attitudes of that period in American history is captured so completely. Escalating tension erupts when Eve enters Leon in tap and then ballet lessons. This is 1960 South Dakota cattle country, and Al is disgusted with his son dancing ballet. His bruising taunts toward Leon over his dance lessons were harrowing at times for this reader. Leon paid such a terrible cost as his life went off the rails. This novel laid bare a dysfunctional family and its impact on each of the separate members. Isabel Allende wrote Paula while tending to her daughter, Paula Frías Allende, who was in a coma arising from complications of porphyria. Allende started the book as a letter to Paula, explaining what she was missing so she would not be confused when she recovered. The novel includes accounts both of Paula's treatment and of Allende's life, sometimes overlapping with the content of Allende's first novel, The House of the Spirits. Paula died on December 6, 1992. She was survived by her husband, Ernesto Diaz, and other family members. Paula Daly is a British thriller, suspense and mystery author from Lancashire. Daly started out as a self-employed physiotherapist before she hit it big with her debut Just What Kind of Mother Are You which she published in 2013. Keep Your Friends Close her second novel made the shortlist for the CWA Goldsboro Gold Dagger Award in 2014. Given the popularity of her novels, they have been translated into more than fourteen languages across the globe. Just like many authors she has her comfort reads the best of which is Anne of Green Gables and anything by Kate Atkinson. She has been reading the novel for years and asserts that she wants to be the lead character Anne on some level. Paula loves reading and can do it practically anywhere from in bed with a coffee in the morning in the bath in the evenings, in the car while waiting for her children to come out of school and even when she is cooking. As for her writing, she loves to do between 800-1000 words every day from her bedroom that overlooks Lake Windermere. When she is not writing she loves to either take a nap or daydream while taking in the beauty outside her window.Lawless, Jill (22 March 2015). Cualquier libro de esta autora que leído, es un libro especial y excepcional dentro de su género. Pero éste en particular, ha sido el más especial para todos. a b O'Connor, William (20 April 2015). "The Fastest-Selling Adult Novel in History: Paula Hawkins' 'The Girl On The Train' ". The Daily Beast. As René grew older, her family relationships grew more and more complex with only a fine line between love and hate, condemnation and forgiveness. Saunders did a commendable job having René walk that line in ways that felt very real. All the characters here are brilliantly painted by Doyle. This is a story of hope and redemption. We get the feeling that Paula will prevail despite her horrendous past of being brutalised and humiliated. This is one series you definitely want to start at the beginning with as it references things and characters in the previous books.
