A shocked Thorfinn tries to assassinate King Canute, but is sentenced to a life of enslavement when stopped by Thorkell. This switch was caused by Yukimura, who found he could not keep up a long-term weekly production schedule.

Thorfinn and the young men in the village are excited by the prospect of going to war but they have little understanding of what it is really like. Thorfinn tries to enter the battle and is trapped by an English swordsman, but Thorfinn is saved by Askeladd. The slaves do not possess any power to protect themselves; Yukimura believed that the point of slaves is that they should have ideals something which readers should have too. Meanwhile, Askeladd starts a forest fire, causing smoke which confuses the combatants, and sends in Thorfinn to capture the prince.

Askeladd beats Thorfinn into unconsciousness, and Canute stops the fight when Askeladd has delivered the winning blow. D., when Thorfinn is six, the visiting Greenlander Leif Ericson tells him and the village children of his travels to Vinland.It just happened to catch my eye when I was cruising my local library seinen (older male) manga shelves, and I picked it up without even glancing at the premise. To finance their journey, Thorfinn, Leif, Einar, and Leif's adopted son, Thorfinn "Bug-Eyes," devise a plan to travel to Greece and sell narwhal horns. Based on some older references (and the anime) I wasn't sure how accurate it would be, but I should have given Yukimura more credit.
