About this deal

In 1935, a group of Englishmen set off to follow in the footsteps of an expedition that ended in the tragic loss of the majority of its men. I liked the idea that one of the men from the previous expedition was left behind and that Stephen Pearce felt haunted. Michelle Paver climbs the heights with a tale of horrors… stark and gnawing tale of horrors lurking at the limits of human endurance and beyond. In equal measures it showed why some are irresistibly drawn to these mountains and why, possibly, they shouldn’t be.

Thin Air by Michelle Paver | Waterstones

I could feel the chilly winds and the cold in this one and the eerie feel of the mountain really comes to life in her vivid writing. His book, “Bloody but Unbowed: the Assault on Mount Kangchenjunga,” presented Lyell as a hero; even though he and Charles Tennant, were the only survivors of a tragedy, which saw five members of the party perish in the attempt to climb the mountain. there are some other human characters as well but eh whatever, the most compelling part of the story is that Jack meets AN AWESOME HUSKY NAMED ISAAK! Kangchenjunga, as well as other mountains, are places of wonder, where the immense scale becomes alien, and where euphoria morphs with desolation. The one who inherited the family estate, who had everything come easily to him and who dislikes weakness. Paver has an object, and I whimpered anxiously as it brought the added accretion of my memory of Jacobs' story into the room. She went trekking in the Himalayas and used this experience and comprehensive reading to craft her tale. The discovery of an old rucksack is significant and Paver manages to make an everyday object like a rucksack very scary indeed.

Thin Air: A Ghost Story by Michelle Paver | Goodreads

Born in Malawi to a Belgian mother and a father who ran the tiny 'Nyasaland Times', Michelle Paver moved to the UK when she was three.

If you've read Michelle Paver's previous ghost story Dark Matter, you'll know how well she can build a creepy, unsettling atmosphere - and she's done it again here, in a very different environment. She is the author of Without Charity, A Place in the Hills, The Shadow Catcher and Fever Hill all published by Corgi.
