About this deal

All four are hoping to learn and grow from the weekend retreat but the emotional baggage that has come along for the ride is more than anyone bargained for. You'd witness tension and romance and sexy encounters in this house with the spectacular view, and there would be lots of booze and lots of food. It's a dangerous and extremely unhealthy narrative to perpetuate esp for people who do this in real life. We meet single mother Beth, a woman who cannot let go of a terrible accident that she was involved in that remains etched on her memory. This is where Fiona really shines as she is so adept at weaving both character story and personal growth into a highly engaging narrative.

The Long Weekend by Gilly Macmillan | Goodreads

Thank you so much to Hachette Australia for providing me with a copy of this book, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review! There's not a great deal of action within the story, but there was plenty of friendship/relationship drama between the characters to keep the reader entertained. The Long Weekend provides an intimate portrait of the lives of four different individuals over a three-day period. I am quite pleased I happened to read this during a nice dry spell, because my liver is yelling a happy HALLELUJAH. Here, you could hike through the mountain of fire at Timanfaya National Park , in Lanzarote , or across the unique rock formations of Roques de Garcia in Tenerife .When all three of their husbands are delayed, Emily, Jayne and Ruth set out to the remote Dark Fell Barn for their couples’ weekend alone. Meanwhile, a new generation bought or (more often) rented their own grand houses, many of them facilitated in this not too long afterwards by the depression, when the market was flooded with such properties. As soon as the wives, who are traveling ahead of their husbands, arrive they immediately are delivered a letter. But along with their notepads and laptops, each of the participants has brought some emotional baggage.

The characters all have faults, some more grave than others, and no one will escape the weekend unscathed. From the beginning it was evident that Beth wasn’t at the retreat for the same reasons as everyone else. The Plot (from Goodreads): Amy jumps at the opportunity when she’s offered a nannying job in picturesque West Cork. And there’s no better way to tick your way through that bucket list than with a few short breaks throughout the year. You could treat the kids to the thrills and spills of Aqua Natura Waterpark or marvel at the works of Gaudi at La Sagrada Familia . All the couple's came with baggage of their own making, and one individual creates her own little drama.
