Very quickly though, the tide turns and we’re finishing up – lamenting the fact that we’ve rushed our food. by Burritto is a new joint in town injecting a much needed buzz into Mexican street food in Shoreditch. So we kicked things off with crab cakes, plantain croquettes and ricotta flowers (which weren’t flowers at all, they were blini type pancakes, so don’t be fooled. We set about the wraps, the tacos, the ‘deconstructed guacamoles’ and assorted tortillas, like recently-freed, hitherto-starved beasts. By the time we sit down at our table I realise I’m hungry as hell; booze-accentuated emptiness becomes very apparent.

We’ve always wanted to find a way to bring the Rebel Dining Society experience to a wider audience and think that with Death by Burrito we’ve cracked it. Situated on Kingsland Road, the venue will feature experimental cocktails and a concise, street food-style menu with authentic Mexican burritos, tacos and small bites. We liked our cocktails but as they were all tequila based, they were a bit one trick pony and, as badass as I am, I couldn’t drink them all night long.

If there’s no room for a table then a space at the bar beckons, which is equally intimate, only with the added benefit of some shot drinking, cocktail mixing, temporary tattoo wearing bar staff for company. The roasted apple-and-sage-pork tray bake – brown your chops and apple slice, whack in the pack and pop in the oven – is a cheat's winter week-night winner. Delicious modern recipes from Death by Burrito, the revolutionary Mexican eatery based at the Catch bar in the heart of Shoreditch, with a new branch recently opened in central London. There are no starters but a few 'big bites' (including a cheeseburger with candied bacon and jalapeño), a few sides, and a single pudding in the form of ancho chilli ice cream sundae.

I ask for a recommendation for a drink, I end up with a mixture of rye whiskey, sweet vermouth and Brooklyn beer, which is rough-edged, but surprisingly gluggable.Taking up residency at Catch, the Old Street end of Kingsland road it is the new project from the Rebel Dining Society peeps, Shay Ola and Ryan Chetiyawarda who have raised the game with their ace cocktails and tasty grub. I have an unusual encounter with a bouncer, I innocently ask him if he knows the way to ‘Death by Burrito’, but he scowls and tells me to ‘go f*ck myself’ and turns back to his kebab.
