What the Ladybird Heard, What the Ladybird Heard by Julia What the Ladybird Heard, What the Ladybird Heard by Julia

This is one of my 10-month-old's favourite stories! The tale is creative and fun, and the illustrations are vivid and colourful. Fantastic book for babies, toddlers and preschoolers as there are the sounds, voices of the characters, and use of loud and soft tones the parent can make, there is the touch element with the ladybird and "spot the ladybird" problem solving. The rhythms are great too.Although states for toddler we read this book to our baby when she was in the womb...fun story with great colours This is my daughter's favourite book, we read this many times during a day, she is 2 and a half now and can read it from cover to cover from memory, she even corrects me if I read the main rhyme "and the cow said moo" wrong, fantastic read worth every penny. My daughter was given this book for her 2nd birthday, and she loves it! I like the plot, and the gentle rhyming, as well as all the animal noises.

my little girl loves this book. we read it nearly every night before bed - she likes to join in with reading the story. her favourite line is "be carefull not to wake the dog". We love this book, my son because he enjoys finding all of the ladybirds and for the funny (spoiler alert) splosh ending and I love it because it is easy to read aloud and is a great story! The animals on the farm are always noisy, all except for the ladybird who never says a word. But when burglars plot to steal the farmer's fine prize cow, it's the quiet ladybird who comes up with the perfect way to stop their dastardly plan!

A lovely little book, that my nearly 3 year old loves, she asks questions about the book and laughs when the robbers fall in the pond. I like the way it captures children's interest whilst also conveying an important lesson of listening and observing - the quietest of all saves the day and you don't always have to be the loudest to be heard! The thieves ‘crept’ into the farm. Think of synonyms which describe how people can move. Can you demonstrate each one (e.g. sprint, crawled, paced).

Enjoyable animal sounds for my toddler. A source of intrigue for my pre-schooler who joined in with the whispering parts and was fascinated by each of the characters in this story. This was one of the stories included in my show, “Gruffalos, Ladybirds and Other Beasts” which we performed at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2015. Here we are in rehearsal – Malcolm is Lanky Len on the left. The ladybird whispered into each animal’s ear. Think of other words that describe how we can communicate with others (e.g. shouted, screamed, hissed, chattered). One of my television songs, A SQUASH AND A SQUEEZE, was made into a book in 1993, with illustrations by the wonderful Axel Scheffler. It was great to hold the book in my hand without it vanishing in the air the way the songs did. This prompted me to unearth some plays I’d written for a school reading group, and since then I’ve had 20 plays published. Most children love acting and it’s a tremendous way to improve their reading.
