About this deal

Rich with empathy and a searing clarity, Lucy by the Sea evokes the fragility and uncertainty of the recent past, as well as the possibilities that those long, quiet days can inspire. At the heart of this miraculous novel are the deep human connections that sustain us, even as the world seems to be falling apart. 'A superbly gifted storyteller and a craftswoman in a league of her own' Hilary Mantel Interspersed throughout the book are letters written to Adam (but were never set) each year on their anniversary, inspired by Adam's screenplay. The first letters describe how Adam gifted her with Bob when he initially proposed over 10 years ago. Then, on their first anniversary, she had suggested that Adam reach out to Henry Winter about adapting one of Winter's works after his agent had passed away (before the answer had always been no). It resulted in Adam's first Henry Winter adaptation. In the letter, she writes about how Adam doesn't know the role she played in getting Henry Winter to agree to it. By their second anniversary, things are going better for them financially due to the Henry Winter adaption, but it comes at a cost to their relationship because Adam is working so much more. Adam Wright is a screenwriter who earned his reputation after he started adaptations of legendary thriller author Henry Winter’s books and her wife works in dog shelter. Their marriage struggles and Amelia thinks winning a trip to Scotland at a secluded and isolated palace can help them reconnect even though later they found out this is place is old chapel which is presumed to be haunted because of unlawful witch massacres! Hi! Just finished listening to the Audiobook, and got hooked with the story and the plot. It mesmerized me that the letters were written by Robin, who I though once that she might be Adam’s mom, or Henry’s wife. Then when i progressed in the story i thought also that she could be October. It was a chilling surprise that it was the woman who wrote the letters. Although there are many questions that popped into our heads when we finished the book, the story had successfully intrigued my imagination and curiosity even after MOST of the events have been explained. Every anniversary the couple exchange traditional gifts – paper, cotton, pottery, tin – and each year Adam’s wife writes him a letter that she never lets him read. Until now. They both know this weekend will make or break their marriage, but they didn’t randomly win this trip. One of them is lying, and someone doesn’t want them to live happily ever after.

Adam is a workaholic screenwriter. He also happens to have Prosopagnosia, aka facial blindness. Going on this trip is the last thing he wants to do, and he makes it very clear. What he doesn’t know, is that if things don’t go according to plan, only one of us will be going home.Nothing like having a positive attitude when you’re trying to salvage a troubled marriage. Amelia wins a weekend getaway for her and her husband at an isolated remodeled chapel in the Scottish countryside. Their marriage is troubled and they hope this time away together will help repair what is broken. Soon after arrival, mysterious and peculiar things begin to happen.

Robin, Adam and Bob have returned to London. Robin’s book will be published. Adam is happy, though he feels guilty about the fact that HE was driving the car that killed his mother. Amelia was in the car with him and she got blamed, as he got out of the car after the accident and she drove away. I guess Adam also didn’t recognize grown-up Amelia when she showed up (but people do change over that span of time.) Did he realize that he and Amelia had hit his mother and their dog with the car (maybe he recognized that red kimono?) Seventh anniversary letter (copper): October has been found dead by suicide. Adam and his wife take a trip to New York. Adam & Amelia win a weekend away to Scotland and decide to use it to celebrate their anniversary. Adam is a screenwriter and a workaholic, which isn’t helping their marriage. Maybe a weekend away will be just what they need to repair their relationship. Adam suffers from prosopagnosia (face blindness), but in public his wife stays by his side and helps him out when someone they know approaches. Sometimes. She can be a little passive-aggressive. This feature adds a fun and unique element to the story.

The French game "pierre, papier, ciseaux, puits" (stone, paper, scissors, well) is unbalanced; both the stone and scissors fall in the well and lose to it, while paper covers both stone and well. This means two "weapons", well and paper, can defeat two moves, while the other two weapons each defeat only one of the other three choices. The stone has no advantage to well, so optimal strategy is to play each of the other objects (paper, scissors and well) one third of the time. [55] "pierre, papier, ciseaux, puits";Nothing is as it seems and with Adam and Amelia at such odds before they even get to the chapel, it doesn't help that so much d This was an entertaining, fast-paced, and atmospheric read. I did not like any of the characters, except for Bob, the dog. He was the true hero of this story. I found Amelia and Adam insipid, but I was curious enough to see how their weekend trip would play out to keep reading. Investigating with the help of an ex-boyfriend, Mae dives headlong into a neon joyride through the jungle of contemporary Hollywood. Pitted against the twisted system she's worked so hard to perpetuate, she's desperately fighting for redemption, and her life.
