Mind-Body Approach to the Highs and Lows Mindful New Mum: A Mind-Body Approach to the Highs and Lows

I read it because I wanted to get a glimpse into how my anxiety might change were I to get pregnant, but I came away knowing very little. I don’t think this book gets into the motherhood aspect quite as thoroughly as it might have done, exploring, for instance, the link between anxiety and PND. It’s also written from a very middle class, nuclear family normy perspective (“My husband came home from work and I hadn’t done the laundry. I fee like such a failure.” - that kind of thing) and so fails to account for the far more complex difficult issues low-income and/or single mothers, for example, might face. Breathing exercises and positive self-affirmations can only get you so far... These little gestures are statements of worth. We are telling ourselves we are equally worth being hydrated, patience, well-rested, and fed as our children are. They might seem little, but the little things have the power to make big changes in how we value ourselves. The most powerful tool Anna has to communicate this isn't the letters after her name, it is the fact that she is open about her own experience of maternal anxiety. By sharing her journey, she gives you the confidence to reframe yours. Life is so much more enjoyable when you aren’t living at the very edge of your resources. Consider how your child’s understanding of their worth would shift if you ignored their basic needs? Their self-worth would dip, just as yours does when you ignore your own.MOM rests on the idea that using the abilities of the mind, like visualisation, imagination and relaxation, we can create new movement patterns allowing us to control how the body produces movement. Producing accurate movement with the least amount of effort leads us to reducing muscle stress and minimising potential injury. We’re told ‘it takes a village’ to raise a child, yet it’s so common for us to act as our very own one-woman village. Self-sufficiency is so praised in our culture, that we may feel a failure if we find ourselves needing to ask for support, share emotions, or admit a need. Anxiety is making motherhood a less pleasant, more fraught and pressured experience, and we do not have to accept joy-sapping worry and energy-draining overthinking as part of the motherhood job description.
