About this deal

Kari Hotakainen is a Finnish writer. Hotakainen started his writing career as a reporter in Pori. In 1986, he moved to Helsinki. He became a full-time writer in 1996. He has two children with his wife, sound technician Tarja Laaksonen, whom he married in 1983. He has also worked as a copywriter and as a columnist for the Helsingin Sanomat. When he retired from Formula 1 at the end of 2021, Raikkonen had called time on something which he had considered just a ‘hobby’ for several years already, heading home to spend more time with his family, the days of wild parties now behind him. Only 1500 copies of the book were made available for the launch of Mission Winnow, a PMI initiative aimed at creating engagement around the role of science, technology and innovation as a powerful force for improvements. Leading the 2012 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in the Lotus, Kimi’s race engineer was informing him of Fernando Alonso behind and that he would keep him updated on the Ferrari driver’s pace. Kimi didn’t like the sound of that. I loved it. I thought it was fascinating - really, really interesting story that he's got to tell... I've known him for years and I learned an awful lot.' Marc Priestley?

The book is a collection of the Scuderia Ferrari driver’s quotes turned into Haikus – a form of Japanese poetry comprising three lines of five, seven, and five words. But Raikkonen, not known for his conformity, has created Haiku poems to his own length. As Ferrari were pushing Kimi in his Ferrari out onto the grid in Baku in 2017, there were a few very important pieces of equipment missing.Kimi Raikkonen will always be remembered in F1 for his racing prowess, and he is equally regarded as one of the series’ best characters. When he and Minttu were getting serious he promised her to be a good boyfriend: no cheating and no lying

As most of the F1 world knows, Raikkonen is a man of few words. When he does speak, Raikkonen makes every word count. In the words of the Scuderia Ferrari driver: "The right words do not need others to mean something." The book Winnow Your Words: Kimi’s Book of Haiku, was originally released by Philip Morris International (PMI) as part of the press kit when the company launched its Mission Winnow initiative with its partner Scuderia Ferrari at the Japan Grand Prix in Suzuka. Hotakainen osaa kirjoittaa, mutta ei tästä aiheesta kovin ihmeellistä tekstiä hänkään saanut aikaan. Tiivistettynä: Kimi got his revenge though when Priestley was one of the guests at his Lapland home for the yearly Finland “piss-up”. This is a book about a Formula One driver written by someone who thinks Formula One is absolutely stupid and pointless and thinks that anyone involved (fans, team members, the FIA, etc.) who isn’t Kimi is an absolute idiot. No one has Formula 1 as their hobby. No one would say they’re going to a Formula practice in the evening. All the same, at every bar and petrol station you find experts who will tell you that the Sepang circuit simply doesn’t suit such and such a driver.

He especially hates them if there is no real purpose to them, as he stated in his aforementioned biography: “I can’t be bothered to answer when the voice at the other end says ‘it’s nothing really, I just called to ask how you were’.” Childhood poverty, running away from military service to make a race, and going on benders between Formula One races are some of the revelations in this new book that sheds light on the life of usually taciturn Finnish driver Kimi Räikkönen.’ In the press conference he was asked what kind of a dad he wants to be and his answer was: “Good and beloved”

Through its gnomic brevity, Haiku articulates the profundity of simple moments or ideas. Fans delight in Raikkonen’s taciturn non-conformity, laced with succinct humour, and in his hands the Haikus open a window to his very soul, for example: Speaking of chilled, it was a hot Sunday in Malaysia for the 2009 Malaysian Grand Prix, though a torrential downpour would bring out the red flags as the race was suspended. It’s a great book. Makes you want to invite Kimi for a beer. Didn’t give all the five stars as I would like to have red a longer book. But on the other hand, when I stop thinking about who it was written about, it is rather long book.... here’s the remaining one: ⭐️ Kimi and his buddies found powder used for treating rashes onboard a rental plane. They march through the customs covered in white powder. When asked where they’re coming from, Kimi said: “Colombia” More remarkable still, there's the question of why the Sauber Formula One team got it into their heads that it would be a good idea to give a test to an unknown driver who was the veteran of a tiny number of minor car races. That he turned out to be sufficiently exceptional to get a contract with them (despite the objection of then boss of the governing body, Max Mosley, who regarded him as too dangerously inexperienced to be given the required racing licence) is in all honesty less significant than his ever getting the chance to demonstrate such ability in the first place.

It was more about Kimi "being Kimi" through some random anecdotes from his life, which was fine with me, and less about Kimi the F1 champion. Apart from ‘good morning’, Kimi hasn’t said a word on the way there, even though his closest colleagues, Mark and Sami, are in the car. I recall what Sami said to me earlier: ‘Kimi becomes a racing driver first thing in the morning. He goes where no one has any business or the keys to enter: his own world. What might look like introversion from the outside is simply concentration.’ He also pees in his cars sometimes during qualifying because waiting in the car for one hour is apparently too long

He doesn’t have a lot of time for mobile phones, mind. One ended up in the sea, while he was in the archipelago, after a call with news that his second Ferrari deal had been done. He adds: “In 90 percent of all calls, no one has got anything important to say. In the nineties, with landlines, you were bound to have something to say. For example, people might suggest going out; they didn’t ring just for the fun of it. Raikkonen firmly put himself on the map in Formula 1 with his spell at McLaren, unfortunate to miss out on World Championship glory in 2003 and 2005, before finally achieving that goal in 2007 when he joined Ferrari.
