Band History – Going independent (1995–2002)". Bigbigtrain.com. Archived from the original on 2 May 2014 . Retrieved 16 April 2016. Not ones to go through a year without releasing something on CD or Blu-ray, Big Big Train have released Ingenious Devices, a collection of "mankind and machine" trilogy of East Coast Racer (off 2013's English Electric: Part Two), Brooklands (off 2016's Folklore), and Voyager (off 2019's Grand Tour). As bassist, songwriter, and lyricist Greg Spawton quips in the liner notes, Ingenious Devices is a trilogy in five parts, with short string interlude The Book Of Ingenious Devices and a live version of Atlantic Cable added to round things out. The band created a new arrangement for "Kingmaker", which they performed and recorded in June 2011. "Kingmaker" originally appeared on their 1992 demo album, The Infant Hercules. The new recording features the current line-up and replaced "Master of Time" on the Russian release of Far Skies Deep Time in a mini vinyl album format. [15] Lewry, Fraser (20 November 2021). There seems to me more dimension to the mix as well, with Longdon's voice seemingly set inside the music as opposed to sitting atop it. The original song used a string quartet, but the 17-piece string section adds so much more complexity and beauty to the song. It sounds more mature. With this release, Big Big Train has dared to push the boundaries even further, and in so doing, have created an impressive evolution. Ingenious Devices consists of new versions of East Coast Racer, Brooklands and Voyager, which feature an elite 17-piece string section recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London.

Rikard Sjöblom adds: “I have been campaigning for a long time for Big Big Train to come to Sweden, so I am really pleased that we’re bringing the band for the first time not only to my home country for two shows but also to play two other dates in Denmark and Norway. I hope the Scandinavian prog fans will come out in force to see us live!” The reimagined arrangement of “Atlantic Cable” greatly benefits from the addition of strings. Delicate piano melodies intermingle with keys reminiscent of Yes, culminating in a memorable crescendo of guitar. by the introduction by piano and violin.
