The film portrayed Aylward as an utterly fearless, faith-filled and dutiful Englishwoman who went to China as a missionary, ran an inn for muleteers, took in orphans, fell in love with a Chinese officer, and then led 100 orphan children across the mountains to safety from the invading Japanese forces. After reading the book, I have to say it goes a lot more in depth on Gladys's story (as books tend to do). I was particularly impressed by the character's dauntless courage through everything. But the book humanizes her a lot more. She wasn't totally fearless. She had struggles, internal as well as external. Her faith in God helped her through a lot. But she was not without fear. The Beddgelert area was chosen by producer Mark Robson as a location scene because of its striking resemblance to Northern China. The work has gone well and , said Mr. Davis: “I am very grateful for the friendliness and co-operation shown by everyone here. They have helped us enormously.” Also in the name of authenticity scenes depicting the children singing had to be dubbed as their voices sounded more Liverpool than China. On 15 October 1930, having worked for Sir Francis Younghusband, [4] Aylward spent her life savings on a train passage to Yangcheng, Shanxi Province, China. The dangerous trip took her across Siberia on the Trans-Siberian Railway at a time when the Soviet Union and China were in an undeclared war. [5] She was detained by the Russians, but managed to evade them with local help and a lift from a Japanese ship. She then traveled across Japan with the help of the British Consul, and took another ship to China.

I can also remember going to the premiere which was held in the Odeon in Liverpool. We thought we were the bees knees. This was Donat’s final film. The man had suffered from chronic asthma all his life and had, consequently, turned down numerous good roles because of it. By the time he was offered the role of the Mandarin of Yang Cheng in this picture he was not only very ill, but almost penniless as well. In fact, the twenty-five thousand pounds he received for his performance would formulate almost the entire contents of his will, for he would die before the film’s release. He may well have been prophesizing his own imminent death when he bid farewell to Gladys in one scene, saying, ‘I fear we shall never see each other again.’ The trail involves erecting 30 plaques over the next three years in spots where major films have been shot to enable visitors to tour the different locations. Watched the 1958 film, Inn of the Sixth Happiness, starring Ingrid Bergman, as Gladys Aylward, and Curt Jurgens, as Capt. Lin Nan. I wondered if there was a book that the film was adapted from, and lo and behold, there was! It is this book, The Small Woman by Alan Burgess, published in 1957.

He stated: “Up to a week ago we were making wonderful progress, but the recent bad weather has upset all our plans.” Gladys May Aylward (24 February 1902 – 3 January 1970) was a British-born evangelical Christian missionary to China, whose story was told in the book The Small Woman: The Heroic Story of Gladys Aylward, by Alan Burgess, published in 1957. The book served as the basis for the film The Inn of the Sixth Happiness, starring Ingrid Bergman, in 1958. The film was produced by Twentieth Century Fox, and filmed entirely in North Wales and England. [1] Early life [ edit ]

Some four miles from Nantmor, too, in the Sygyn Fawr, a disused copper mine, a Chinese village called Peh Chu is coming to life. Here a temple, a market place, a village square and ornamental gates will be put up and to give the scene a real true-to-nature touch, ditches have been opened up and small ponds made. The Inn of the Sixth Happiness is a 1958 20th Century Fox film based on the true story of Gladys Aylward, a tenacious British woman, who became a missionary in China during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Directed by Mark Robson, who received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Director, the film stars Ingrid Bergman as Aylward and Curt Jürgens as her love interest, Captain Lin Nan, a Chinese Army officer with a Dutch father. Robert Donat, who played the mandarin of the town in which Aylward lived, died before the film was released. The musical score was composed and conducted by Malcolm Arnold. The cinematography was by Freddie Young.

A lot has been said, both positive and negative, about the main Asian roles played by Caucasian actors in this film. As an Asian of Chinese descent myself, I've learnt not to get too bent up over this, especially when one considers when this movie was made. One of the children brought to the Snowdonia village was Perry Lee, now a 51-year-old housing manager. p. 122: David Davis stared aghast. There were at least thirty armed Japanese, intent on rape, with struggling, screaming, half-dressed women. Unarmed against thrity soldiers, David knew he stood little chance of preventing this outrage. "Pray" he bellowed to the women at the top of his voice. "Pray, all of you!" The Japanese officer swung on him savagely and drew his revolver. And yesterday the children who came together to make what would become a classic Hollywood film were reunited in the same spot almost 50 years later. Finally, THANK YOU for bringing up “The Man Who Knew Too Much.” If ever there was a movie that cried out NOT to be remade… She soon inherits the whole mission when Athene Sayler dies. And she supports it by working as a foot inspector for the local mandarin. In those days of the twenties among other things the Kuomintang government was trying to do was undo the Chinese custom of footbinding females at a young age so they would have petite feet. It met with a lot of local resistance, but she proves up to the task.
