About this deal

The cool thing about (early) Tom Clancy was that it was so plausible. The earnest, macho tone of Clancy's stories fit the grim Cold War setting really well. Now you have a generation of writers writing in that same earnest, macho tone about people having high-speed hovercraft battles, shooting crossbows at each other, and getting eaten by killer whales! How can you take yourself seriously when you're writing this crap?!

Suid, Lawrence H. (1996). Sailing the Silver Screen: Hollywood and the U.S. Navy. Annapolis, MD: Naval Institute Press. ISBN 1-55750-787-2. What is missing is any real detecting. Carpenter finds a few clues, but there is barely any characterisation of the ‘suspects’. I guessed who the Soviet agent was long before the end, not because there were any pointers, but because he was the only person from the ice station who had more than a couple of lines. Action Scenes His later works include River of Death (1981) (filmed in 1989), Partisans (1982), Floodgate (1983), and San Andreas (1984). Often, these novels were worked on by ghost writers specializing in drama, with MacLean providing only the plots and characters. [53] His last novel was Santorini (1986), which was published after his death. [54] His estate left behind several outlines. One of them was filmed as Death Train (1993). [55] His later books were not as well received as the earlier publications, and in an attempt to keep his stories in keeping with the time, he sometimes lapsed into unduly improbable plots. Drift Ice Station Zebra is not answering. In fact, after reporting a catastrophic fire which killed a few of its men, the remote British arctic monitoring station went off grid. Since it’s a drifting station, due to the north pole’s circular motion, nobody can actually pin point where it is. The West’s recon planes are getting nothing and even the surprising assistant from the Russians who sent an “Ice Breaker” class ship, came up with nothing. On 6 May 2013, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Warner Bros. will undertake a remake of Ice Station Zebra, with Christopher McQuarrie signed to direct and write the screenplay for the film. Matthew has also written several short stories, including Roger Ascham and the King's Lost Girl, a special free prequel to The Tournament which is available online. Other short stories include Time Tours, The Mine and the hyper-adrenalised romp, Altitude Rush. Trevor Barnaby - Brigadier of the Special Air Service who has never failed a mission. Killed by Schofield when he shoots out one of the windows of the diving bell, causing the diving bell to implode and crush Barnaby. This only leaves the ‘will they make it?’ factor of the action set-pieces to maintain interest, and they are of course excellent. Alistair Maclean’s strong point is his ability to evoke the tension and adrenalin of men facing seemingly impossible odds. Ice Station Zebra: My Verdict Harvey and Hudson to Co-Star". The New York Times. Archived from the original on 2021-06-05 . Retrieved 2020-08-07. Paddy Chayefsky, who had just written The Americanization of Emily for Ransohoff, was hired to write the script.

Writer Algis Budrys described MacLean's writing style as - "hit 'em with everything but the kitchen sink, then give 'em the sink, and when they raise their heads, drop the plumber on 'em". [61]The Man who Knows where the Action Is. Alistair MacLean and Godfrey Smith. The Sunday Times (London, England), Sunday, 18 January 1970; pg. 37[S]; Issue 7651. (1523 words) Head, Dominic (26 January 2006). The Cambridge Guide to Literature in English. Cambridge University Press. p.431. ISBN 9780521831796. I know nothing about military technology, so had no idea how real the descriptions of weapons and various accessories used were. Mentions of real world resources like microfiche and paper atlases did show the book’s age though. The geopolitical machinations were depressingly believable however. I enjoyed the range of characters - and knowing that certain favourite individuals reappear in later books meant I wasn’t worried about what happened to them. Published in late 1998, Ice Station was an instant hit, delivering a new style of action thriller to Australian readers. It was snapped up by major publishers in the US, UK and Germany. Tiny disclaimer #2: before embarking on what might possibly be the most relaxing adventure of your life, we sort of-kind of advise you to consult with your doctor, or any other qualified health care professional. Just in case. You never know. Better safe than sorry and all that.

No nudity, no sex, lots and lots Before getting to the novel itself I feel compelled to explain what drove me to grab an “old” Alistair MacLean classic.

The novel is parodied in the Sealab 2021 third-season episode, "Frozen Dinner". The Sealab crew must rescue scientists aboard Ice Station Zebra, a research station on top of an ice floe. The ice floe has turned upside down and trapped the two men, while the Sealab crew tries to rescue them in a submarine. While the scientists immediately turn to cannibalism, the Sealab sub – led by a German crew resembling that from Das Boot – predictably fumbles the rescue.
