Anywhere I traveled in the past 20 years, the Lonely Planet guide was the most important item in my backpack, for the wealth of PRACTICAL information it provided. In free liberal democracies that's fine but I wonder about the value in one party states like Vietnam. Lonely Planet covers must-see spots but also enables curious travellers to get off beaten paths to understand more of the culture of the places in which they find themselves.

It listed the nightclub Apocalypse Now (which can possibly be the most famous nightclub in all of Vietnam) in Hanoi when it really is in Saigon. I accept this is not a history book but some of the information supplied on the wars and takeovers was at the least one sided. Sleep masks, ear plugs and noise-cancelling headphones (especially if the bus is playing music or movies) are recommended. I bought the electronic version of this and found myself disappointed at/by two factors: firstly, it was very difficult to navigate around and required jumping pages to follow links which didn't need to be in a different place, and secondly, there's a serious lack of photographs and diagrams (especially later in the book).
