About this deal

They condemned two pairs of forklift truck forks a few weeks back when I was on site, they were destined for the scrap skip after a firm came in and NDT tested them and found cracks.

I try to gauge the thickness of the wedges by estimating the play that is present in both mortise and tenon, and the amount of existing material I have to work with. When this happens, you rely on glue alone, which may well hold, but the idea of the joint is to create additional mechanical strength within the wood and the whole joint — integrity — integrated, whole, complete. seen em used quite a lot in pairs,,, used them meself when we were putting the back veranda up to square it up. Used for splitting mating surfaces, flanges and wedging split fasteners, this range of fox wedges are useful in the engineering industry. The company's registered address is Accsol House High Street, Johnstown, Wrexham, LL14 2SH, United Kingdom.

Even though it will most likely still work if the wedge is the opposite and wrong way, it is better that the wedge is placed so that the end seats squarely to the bottom facing surface of the mortise and, yes, to 1b too. Look for short grain and especially any unusual or sudden change in grain direction around the tenon area. This grain shown will be weak and will split where you need continuous grain to maximise strength in the wedging of the tenon.

This will stop the wood from splitting as the wedges tighten when the tenon aspect of the joint seats fully against the mortise piece. Because of this, you are unlikely to ever see or even know such a joint type has ever been used let alone existed. Wedges are commonly used in building and DIY work, to hold on axe heads, the axe head itself, to wedge open doors, the ends of chisels and other cutting tools are wedges, the ends of nails etc. My first thought was that I would have to relieve the mortise all the way around, but dovetailing the sides of the mortise on either side of the spreading action was really all that was necessary.

I decided on it for a specific reason I will reveal in the video we film in the first week of the new year. This is the foxed (fox wedged) mortise and tenon `I made a short but informative video for on YouTube and posted a few days ago.In my YouTube video showing my use of this tenon type, the wedges at their widest point totaled a full 1/2″ (12. I know from past experience that these shackles are made from harder wearing steel than ordinary galvanised shackles. Which, again, doesn’t matter all that much in most cases but is worth keeping in mind for the occasions when it might prove useful.

Drilling a hole to strengthen a slot or right-angle is a classic trick, distributing the forces that would otherwise tend to be concentrated at the intersection of the two planes. This maximises wood where it is needed and the shouldered sides seat the joint and work as long-term lateral stabilizers. In additional to your legal rights relating to faulty or misdescribed goods, all products come with manufacturer's warranty of between 1 and 5 years. Dovetailed mortise, wedges ready for applying pressure via clamp or hammer blows in successive blows. I have quite a number of steel, brass and bronze wedges for jobs in non spark areas and refineries etc.

They are also handy if you need to split flanged pipework as you can remove the bolts and knock a wedge in right on the edge of the flange that will give you a gap large enough to get a new gasket in etc. There are advocates for using small holes at the end of the saw kerf to work as stops to stop the wood from splitting. A few pairs of wedges were always about on a joiner's bench for applying pressure here and there when clamps were't available or convenient. In the old days a young guy starting of in the building trade, very soon came across the use of wedges.
