About this deal

It will be the first time in 70 years that there has been a coronation of a British monarch. Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September 2022, was crowned in June 1953 when she was aged just 25.

A fanfare will sound as The King, wearing the Imperial State Crown, followed by The Queen, wearing Queen Mary’s Crown, emerge from the Shrine and join the Coronation Procession out of Westminster Abbey as the National Anthem is sung. The coronation is taking place at Westminster Abbey in London (Image: PA) PART ONE – THE RECOGNITION The embroidered illustrations were worked in different colours, using fine twisted silk threads, and each roundel has been edged with Gold Grecian and Pearl Purl. The Stole has a crimson lining and a gold twisted fringe. The Archbishop will say: “Receive the Bracelets of sincerity and wisdom, tokens of God’s protection embracing you on every side.” The Archbishop delivers a sermon. There was no sermon in the late Queen’s service in 1953, but a sermon is usually part of the coronation service.

The Collect – a summary and thematic type of prayer used at most Church of England services – is read by the ArchbishopIn 1937, the 11 year old Princess Elizabeth had watched her father, King George VI, crowned in the elaborate ceremony and 16 years later on 2 June 1953, her own official coronation was to take place. The Anglican Archbishop in Jerusalem, who was present during the consecration of the Chrism oil earlier this year, will receive the Ampulla containing the oil at the High Altar, which will be blessed by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Their Majesties will remove their Robes of State, and The King will sit in the Coronation Chair, on the Cosmati pavement. The Anointing Screen, newly made for the Service and inspired by the window of His Majesty’s Chapel Royal, will be brought into position around the Chair by Guardsmen of the Household Division. The Anointing, the most solemn and sacred part of the Service, takes place as the choir sings Handel’s ‘Zadok the priest’, which was composed for the Coronation of King George II in 1727 and has become synonymous with such occasions. The Archbishop of Canterbury, assisted by the Dean of Westminster and the Archbishop of York, will anoint The King’s hands, chest and head. Afterwards, The King will approach the High Altar and kneel, and the Archbishop of Canterbury will pray. Ede and Ravenscroft create hand-crafted bespoke robes and garments, using traditional skills, expertise and the finest textiles. The company has made robes and tailored garments for Royal, civic, legal and academic ceremonies in over forty countries around the world to date. Queen Elizabeth II is the sixth Queen to have been crowned in Westminster Abbey in her own right. The first was Queen Mary I, who was crowned on 1 October, 1553. The headpiece, which was made for King George VI's coronation in 1937, includes an openwork gold frame mounted with three large stones and set with 2,868 diamonds in silver mounts as well as 17 sapphires, 11 emeralds, and 269 pearls in gold mounts. It also features a fitted purple velvet cap and an ermine band.

Participating in the act of recognition when the King is presented to the congregation at the start of the service: On 24 June 1953, the Honours of Scotland (the crown, the sceptre and the sword) were carried before The Queen in a procession from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to St Giles Cathedral.

King Charles battling conflicting advice on how to make Royals more relevant

The Dean of HM Chapels Royal, Dame Sarah Mullally reads Luke 4:16-21. Female clergy are participating in a coronation for the first time, with female priests introduced in the Church of England in 1994 and female bishops in 2014. The Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla will take place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday.
