About this deal

So after 16 weddings, a few landscape outings and other various bits and pieces; I think I’m pretty well placed to give you my thoughts on this lens.

That said so far I’ve only had CA on a couple of photographs I’ve made using this lens and fortunately it’s not apparent in some of the more common CA-causing scenarios (such as portraits with a strong and contrasting rim light, or a cool, blue window light), but if you shoot a branch with the sky as the background, or if you photograph a building, looking upward, you may spot some aberration along the edges. In the second and third examples I’m positioned a little further away, but still focused on the foreground subject, allowing the background to blue a little as a consequence with the aperture set to f2. The separately available waterproof lens port makes it possible to use this lens for wide-angle photography underwater. What I'd say about that lens on my 16mp m4/3 bodies is this: like the Olympus, there's a high degree of linear correction being applied, though not quite as much as with this Olympus Pro lens.

I am looking forward to my next lens adventure now; having had a look around I’ll probably get myself a 24mm F1. I played that multi-system game for a bit but I’m just an art photographer and really couldn’t justify it. Field curvature is the big difference between the two lenses, as the Panasonic has far less (but the Olympus seems sharper in the central area and obviously goes to f/2. It’s an unscientific test because I don’t shoot scientific pictures and I want to see how this lens may do for something simple like interiors (which is one of the reasons I bought this lens).

Very nice review and I’m — as you might remember — an ultrawide fanatic for close-in work (but not on people!

In essence, pulling the corners in from 7% to 1% is a lot of pixel pushing in an area that is probably already struggling. I measured the focusing speed as essentially the same as the Lumix G 7-14mm f4 when both were mounted in turn onto an OMD EM1 body. The lens also usefully features a distance scale, which is cleverly revealed by pulling back the Manual Focus Collar to instantly engage manual focusing. PRO is a premium ultra wideangle zoom giving a 35mm format equivalent of 14-28mm, so a really useful focal length range, perfect for architecture, interiors and scenics. Obviously, more traditional landscape type applications will be a siren song, but I’ve never been a huge fan of using ultra wides, but rather semi wides to near standard focal lengths for more traditional landscape stuff, just because while you can get a sweeping view, you tend to sacrifice detail and realistic perspective in my opinion when using ultra wides. The range matches the coverage of the Lumix G 7-14mm, but it's a stop brighter and boasts weather-sealing too.
