Thankfully, Valentino’s creativity, characters and writing style more than makes up for it, up to and including the satisfying, surprising, bitter end. Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney; and she still enjoys dancing around in Snow White pajamas and serenading her family members with Sleeping Beauty’s “Once Upon A Dream” (though, unlike Princess Aurora, she is not blessed with the gift of song).

We all know the story of Peter Pan, we know Captain Hook, but do we know how he went from the intelligent James to the cowardly Hook? While I have enjoyed all the Villains novels to date, this one gave me the greatest angst and discomfort in knowing what becomes of Captain James Hook and how desperate his beginnings were. This is the 7th Hook-focused book I’ve read, the 6th origin story (I just like to establish what number I’m on each time I review another one lol). Despite the book being based, at least in part, in Neverland, it wasn't until the Odd Sisters were part of the conversation that I felt any real magic about what was happening.Depending on the age it’s meant for, I obviously understand the story isn’t going to delve into certain things. An origin tale focusing on the diabolical Odd Sisters reveals the dark truth about who they really are and where they came from.

Before the story of the infamous Captain Hook was another, of a baby stripped of his chance to become a Lost Boy. But he finds himself the unwilling villain, beholden to at least 7 different witches, Blackbeard, Peter, crocodiles, and hell I lost count. After the death of her beloved father, she is forced to maintain a shabby dignity as the unwanted boarder of her tyrannical uncle, fending off marriage to a local mill owner. Step into Disney Mirrorverse, where mirrored reflections of iconic characters are amplified and evolved, becoming battle-ready Guardians that must unite to defeat a powerful evil that threatens their home worlds. Belle has broken the enchantress' curse, restoring the Beast to his human form and bringing life back to their castle in the principality of Aveyon. But all his plans are forgotten when he arrives in the small mountain stronghold of San Gabriel and meets her.

The 9th instalment in the hugely successful Villains Tales series, based on Disney’s most infamous pirate, Captain Hook, tells the story of young James Bartholomew, the Lost Boy who never was. In this book their role in everything was extremely nasty, especially because as a reader you already know how Hook's wish to find Neverland will end.

Jack Skellington, the beloved Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, has grown tired of his home's annual scaring routines and longs for something new. On Blackbeard's ship he learns to be a cutthroat pirate, and eventually becomes captain of his own ship, which James is determined to sail to Neverland. There, they will find mermaids, fairies, pirates led by the sinister Captain Hook, and the crocodile who bit off his leg - and still pursues him in hope of the rest! Well, he arrives and everything goes wrong - he's seen as an adult and rejected as a prospective Lost Boy. His obsession with getting back to Neverland, with *SPOILER* wanting to be a kid again, *END SPOILER* could’ve been interesting, but it wasn’t really explored, just something I was repeatedly told. She wasn't the entire reason why Hook went to Neverland but she did have a hand in it by cursing his boot buckles. I struggled to get past the first third of the book, lacking a connection to James as a character and feeling like there wasn't really any plot for me to follow.
