About this deal

Just because we have the same 24-hours, it doesn't mean we can achieve the same things. Privileges play big role on someone's success journey. Privilege including, but not limited to: education, social class, age, nationality, geographic location, physical abilities, race, gender, physical attractiveness, religion.

She founded a popular culture blog in 2010, which can be found at emmagannon.co.uk, and was nominated for a Cosmopolitan Award in 2012 and won Highly Commended in the Young Person's Recognition at the 2015 National Blog Awards. Her blog newsletter has been named a "must-follow" by Harper's Bazaar, The Debrief and Grazia. At the same time, we know that overwork is detrimental: Research suggests that we actually become less productive once we start working more than 55 hours per week. People who are overworked tend to exercise less, smoke more, and see their doctor more often. One group of researchers even theorized that burnout—that term we have for extreme stress and exhaustion—may actually just be depression. This interview feels personal, not just professional, because I’ve recently made a post-Covid leap myself, leaving behind a big job in London to live on the wild coast of Northumberland. At 55, I’m too young to retire (not to mention my pitiful pension), so I need to work, but I don’t want the stress of a big job. I feel personally invested in the question Gannon is exploring – how do we redefine what success means and create a life that we love? The power of less It was the gloomiest era in my life because all I want to be is becoming an ideal mom and the best employee. It took 9 months (in total) to make me realize that life is bigger than just work. And I can fulfill my inner passion and share my energy to other things. Now, I am so done with the success myths.

Emma Gannon was thriving in her portfolio career, enjoying a happy personal life and to anyone looking in, she was undoubtedly a success... She was also burned out and confused at why she felt unhappy, yet was still striving for more. To get the best of both worlds, he recommends we cultivate self-compassion, the practice of responding to our shortcomings with kindness and the recognition that no one is perfect. Not only is self-compassion linked to greater well-being, self-compassionate people also procrastinate less, persevere more, and have less fear of failure. That’s what happens when you’re willing to see things as they are—your flaws included—but not respond with debilitating self-criticism. I don't want to slam a book that other people might find useful, as advice is such a personal thing. However to me this book is just a retelling of what most people already know or we have been told time and time again, self-care 101. Be more grateful, don't be too hard on yourself, capatlism is bullshit there's no one answer to success.

I wish the author had talked to some "normal people". She makes references to essential workers but it feels like a bit of a token gesture.

3. Winners never quit…

Here Emma tells Metro.co.uk about the ‘success myth’ and how to find a more peaceful way of living. Why did you decide to write this book now? Ask yourself, she says, how much money is enough for you? “It can be empowering to simply be aware of what you need in your life and what you want, versus what you think you want, and splitting the difference.” Dahlah nggak usah tergoda dengan Forbes 30 Under 30 (anyway, most of them ternyata kesandung kasus lho).
