The tri-spine horseshoe crab is typically found living in the tropical waters off southeast Asia. There are actually four living species of horseshoe crabs, three of which can be found in the waters of the Pacific Ocean and one that is found along the Atlantic coastline of North America.Encouraging entries from around the world for the sixtieth edition, Wildlife Photographer of the Year will extend the entry fee waiver to photographers who live in Africa, Southeast Asia and Central and South America. These are three regions the competition has historically received less entries from. The WPY Exhibition, Touring Exhibitions and Related Exhibitions shall together be referred to as "the Exhibitions" in these Rules. Your entry must be uploaded in JPEG format. High-quality scans of transparencies or negatives are also acceptable. Looking almost like an extraterrestrial spaceship, the gilded carapace of the arthropod gliding through the dark waters took the judging panel by surprise. When it comes to the tri-spine horseshoe crab specifically, there is a fossil from Lebanon dating to 100 million years old that is thought to belong to the same group as the living species. This means that the ancestors of the beautiful golden arthropod photographed by Laurent were swimming around the warm shallow seas whilst Tyrannosaurus rex stalked the land and pterosaurs soared in the skies. The Natural History Museum’s touring Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition displays the spectacular work of the competition winners before touring internationally. Along with a substantial cash prize for the Grand Title award winners, the 100 selected photographs will also feature in a limited-edition hardcover book, on digital platforms and across global media. Visit, join and support the Natural History Museum today. Protecting the planet. It's in our nature. The trunk that survives is the marine species, but I think that an important part of the story of these animals is that lost diversity, partly in what they were looking like but also in the lost ecologies.’ In consideration for the chance to win an Award for an photograph you submit to the Competition, you hereby grant to us and the Museum the right to reproduce, publicise and exhibit that photograph in any medium (including but not limited to physical copies, electronic copies and on social media) to enable it to be judged for an Award by the Jury or a public vote.
